Classroom management! One of the trickiest skills a new teacher has to learn but one that will help your classes run smoothly and help your students to learn more and better.
Another secret to classroom management that makes a big difference in how students respond to you? Eye contact.
Think about it. If you are asking a student a question, or giving an order such as sit down or stop talking, or even if you yourself are answering one of your student’s questions, are you maintaining eye contact? Or are your eyes wandering, looking for the next problem or situation in the classroom?
When we maintain eye contact when communicating with our students we are both hearing each other. (Remember when you were a kid and your parents said, “Look at me when I’m talking to you”?) Eye contact is an important part of communicating, understanding and hearing. So next time you are talking with your students, make sure you look each other in the eyes!
